About Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park is a prominent abode for around 200 native elephants. Though the park is criticized for the poorly maintained roads, those who endure the rough jeep journey can witness large herds of elephants at an extremely close distance. The Minneriya Tank, a large water body between the park, attracts many birds and small animals like mongoose and squirrels.
Sitting in the jeep by the lake is a great way to quietly observe the natural behavior of birds, animals and insects, especially in the evening when the park comes alive. For wildlife photographers, Minneriya is a paradise! Photographers can peacefully capture stunning shots of animals and birds due to their close proximity. However, apart from a couple of birds and elephants, Minneriya disappoints a majority of tourists. So, unless one has boundless love for elephants, this park can definitely be skipped.
