About National Library, Kolkata
The National Library in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) has the distinction of being the largest library in India. Managed by Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Government of India it is an institution of national importance. Located in beautiful 30 acre Belvedere Estate, library has over 2.2 million books belonging to English and other Indian languages and has special sections for many languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Kashmiri, and Kannada etc. Library even has a separate section for kids.
One needs to be a member of the library to avail the facilities of the library. Any adult person can become the member.
During regular renovation a hidden chamber was found in 2012 by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). There has been speculation on the purpose of such a room ranging from hidden treasure chamber to a torture room. No further information has been made public about it.
