About Thiruvananthapuram

The capital of the southern Indian state of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum is the IT hub of the state and is a fast growing medical tourism destination too. This city built on hills along the sea shore enjoys the reputation of having been visited by the largest number of foreign tourists. The lush forest cover of Thiruvananthapuram inspired The Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi to coin this sobriquet of "Evergreen City of India" for this city.

If you are in Kerala for a little longer you could always pamper yourself with a few lessons in Kathakali, the local dance form, Yoga classes and the famous Kerala Ayurvedic therapy. Also called as the "Gods own Capital" it has a lot to offer to people visiting it. One could take a trip to the richest temple in the whole world, the Padmanabhapuram Palace, or follow the off beaten track into the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, get infotained at the Napier museum, the zoological park, the Keralan museum or the Sree Chithra Art Gallery, or revisit the childhood days with a visit to the Chacha Nehru's Children’s Museum which has a massive collection of dolls, face masks and even paintings. Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is only about 30 Kms from Trivandrum and a great day trip option for wildlife enthusiasts. Built in 1914 by Maharajah Moolam Thirunal, Kowdiar Palace is one of the places to visit in Trivandrum.

Aruvikkara Dam constructed on Karamana River is only 15 Kms from Thiruvananthapuram. Kanyakumari, the popular religious destination for most people on a South India trip is only 87 km from the city. Papanasam Beach in Varkala is one of the best beaches near Trivandrum. You can visit Vizhinjam, a small seaside town to get a glimpse of Kerala's coastal life.

The 16th Century Anjengo Fort built by East India Company is another place to visit around Trivandrum.

The city has several luxury hotels and also offers opportunity for home stay where one could relish the authentic taste of the famous local spices and the culinary specialties all home cooked. You will find Restaurants in Trivandrum offering all types of Cuisines. The local food offers a lavish spread of both vegetarian dishes, pickles, chutneys, snacks and for the non-vegetarians a variety of exotic sea food.
