About Vavuniya
Vavuniya is one of the most important town in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, acting as a entryway to all the towns positioned in Northern Sri Lanka. Vavuniya was formerly the vanguard of the internal war between Sri Lanka army and LTTE. There can be still seen devastation of the inner war. This busy town of Vavuniya (vow-nya) has few tourist attractions but an afternoon spent here isn’t unlikable. Now that road and rail connectivity to Jaffna are much enhanced, some travellers stop-over in Vavuniya these days, but there are ample hotels and restaurants if you are planning your visit.
Due to its political instability, the town is not high on tourist spots and attractions. However, many small eateries and lively restaurants are famed for serving authentic Sri Lankan food. The Archeological Museum is an interesting attraction to see various primitive, limestone statues of the Buddha, but is of no comparison to the relics found in the country’s many ancient cities. A short distance away from the town is the charming Madukanda Vihara, a spot of historic Buddhist significance. Apart from these little things to do, the town offers no other form of entertainment, and can easily be omitted from one’s itinerary.
