About South Park Street Cemetery
Established in 1767, South Park Street Cemetery smells of old and 'time-worn'. The tombs look very Gothic but the style reflects the Indo-Saracenic way of architecture. The dark basalt carvings in the front of each tomb has a distinct Hindu flavour to it. This cemetery has been dysfunctional since 1830 approximaely. The cemetery is not in a church vicinity. The gorgeous tombstones and the Immortal memories are protected by the Archaeological Society of India. There are the graves of many significant men like Derozio, Elijah Impey, William Jones, Robert Kyd, Colin Mackenzie , Micheal Madhusudan Dutta etc. The list is very long. It is a beautiful place that transports you back to the Raj and takes you closer to what life really is.
