About Mathura
Mathura is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Unsurprisingly it is steeped in legends, temples, and wonder. The city is named in the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. The surrounding towns, too, take their place in Hindu legend, as Krishna reputedly traveled to several towns in the region.
Boating on the ghats of the Yamuna River is one alternative activity, but for most visitors, it is the religious elements of the city that draw them here. For those who are not so spiritually inclined, just wandering and talking to the many characters of this city is one of the best activities. During India’s festivals, Holi, Diwali, Mathura lights up with activity and color.
Try the city’s most common breakfast, ‘Kachori and Jalebi’. The dish is a mix of spicy potato curry and a sweet. It sounds odd but all visitors should at least try it. Milky sweets are a specialty here, so feel free to eat sweets after breakfast, too. Mathura is also a good place to browse books, clothes and leather products.
Ardent temple spotters can look for the Birla Mandir; the Birla family built a range of temples across India, all in magnificent white marble. Mathura is one of the seven holy cities of India. As such, it is thought that Moksha can be attained here. Be careful with your belongings in Mathura, and dress respectfully at all times, as this is a holy city.
The city is well connected by road and rail to all other major cities like, New Delhi, Agra, Lucknow.
