Trip Overview

Detailed Overview

Situated at the height of 6,153 meters in Ladakh, Stok Kangri is one of the fascinating treks in India. Located in Hemis National Park, Stok Kangri summit is clearly visible from Leh. Standing at the summit of Stok Kangri, you can view the Indus valley and Zanskar and Karakoram Range. But since it is a 6000 m plus peak. The trek will be challenging for many. Stok Kangri Trek offers the usual challenges of a mountaineering expedition.

We will reach the base camp after 3 days of trekking from Leh. Upon reaching the base camp, a day will be spent there for training a few basic climbing techniques and acclimatising.

July and August are considered to be the best months for Stok Kangri trek. During this period climate will be moderate and you will be able to reach the summit without much delays or hardships.  

 

Brief itinerary

Day-1: Arrive in Leh

Day-2: Acclimatisation and explore Leh

Day-3: Leh - Chang Ma via Stok village, 15 km drive - 5.5 km - 4 hrs trek (13087 ft.)

Day-4: Chang Ma - Mankorma, 3.5 km - 3 hrs trek  (14200 ft.)

Day-5: Mankorma to Basecamp, 4 km - 4 hrs trek (16300 ft.)

Day-6: Acclimatization & training

Day-7: Base camp - Stok Kangri. Climb to the summit and return - 14 km, 14 hrs trek in total (20080 ft.)

Day-8: Base camp to Leh, 13 km - 6 hrs trek -15 km drive

Day-9: Check out from Leh

 

Detailed Itinerary

Day-1: Arrive in Leh

On your arrival in Leh, you check-into the Guest House/Hotel arranged by us. Details of the hotel will be shared with you before your arrival. Minimum 2 days of acclimatization is essential for a high altitude trek like Stok Kangri. The evening can be utilized to explore the Leh and its surroundings.

Day-2: Acclimatisation and explore Leh

On this day you can explore Leh further. Leh has a lot to offer in terms of culture, architecture and natural beauty. There are many monasteries, palaces, forts  and ancient temples You can also enjoy the local as well as the global cuisines available in Leh

Day-3: Leh - Chang Ma via Stok village, 15 km drive - 5.5 km - 4 hrs trek (13087 ft.)

We will start the day with a drive to Stok Village. During the ride and later on in the trek you get to see the beautiful landscapes of the Ladakh region and the peaks surrounding Leh town. Weather during this time of year is pleasant with only a little chance of rain. Stok village is home to a royal palace which has a small museum inside. Crossing Stok village we reach Chang Ma where we set camps and go on a short acclimatization walk.

Day-4: Chang Ma - Mankorma, 3.5 km - 3 hrs trek  (14200 ft.)

Trek to Mankorma will be moderate. We will be trekking beside wild streams and meadows. Mankarmo has a Parachute café. After reaching here we set our camp.

Day-5: Mankorma to Basecamp, 4 km - 4 hrs trek (16300 ft.)

Stok Kangri Trek base camp is a few hours trek from Mankorma. Our base camp there has many water bodies like lakes & streams nearby. Upon reaching there, take a short hike, up the mountain to get an incredible view of the surrounding area. You can see the peaks like Parcha Kangri and Gulap. Getting sufficiently acclimatized is very important at this altitude as in next few days you will experience thin air and steep increase in altitude. Night temperatures can drop quite low here.

Day-6: Acclimatization & training

Today is the final preparation day for summiting. You will be given some training on the basic climbing techniques and also on the use of equipment like the ice axe, crampons, rope etc. Climbing techniques like ascending & descending in the snow, self-arresting using an ice axe will be explained. We go to bed early today as we will start the summit attempt at midnight.

Day-7: Base camp - Stok Kangri. Climb to the summit and return - 14 km, 14 hrs trek in total (20080 ft.)

We will start our day at 12.30 am. After technical gear distribution, we start our walk towards the summit at 2:00 AM. The route to Stok Kangri summit passes through glaciers and finally leads to steep slope to the summit ridge. It is a long climb taking 9-10 hours.  From the summit, one gets the 360-degree view of the region. From the Karakoram in the north to Zanskar ranges in the south, it is an incredible view in the morning light. Descend back to the base camp. Overnight stay in camps.

Day-8: Base camp to Leh, 13 km - 6 hrs trek -15 km drive

This day, we will start trekking back to Leh. It’s a gradual descend to Stok Village from where we drive to Leh. But before you end the day, you would see a lot of snow-clad beauty and memorable view of mountain ranges.

Day-9: Check out from Leh

After the good night's sleep, the trip end and trekkers checkout from the guesthouse.
