Detailed Overview

  • The Chadar Trek, also known as the Frozen River Trek, is a unique and thrilling adventure that takes place on the frozen Zanskar River in the heart of the Ladakh region. The name "Chadar" translates to "sheet" in Hindi, symbolizing the thick layer of ice that covers the river during winter. This challenging trek spans over 9 days, with 5 full days spent trekking across the frozen river, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience of walking on an ice sheet surrounded by towering Himalayan cliffs.
  • The Chadar Trek is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, extreme conditions, and the opportunity to witness the raw, untouched beauty of the Zanskar Valley in winter. The trek allows adventurers to experience ice formations, frozen waterfalls, and the incredible natural environment of the high-altitude desert, where temperatures can plunge as low as -30°C. It is a test of endurance and resilience, requiring trekkers to brave harsh cold and unpredictable ice conditions, making it one of the most sought-after treks for seasoned adventurers.
  • This extraordinary trek also offers a glimpse into the traditional Zanskari lifestyle, as it follows the ancient route used by locals during winter when roads are inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. The trek is not just about physical challenge but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in Ladakhi culture, with visits to remote villages and interactions with the resilient locals who thrive in these harsh conditions. The Chadar Trek is a truly unique adventure, offering both thrill and spiritual connection to nature’s pristine beauty, making it one of the best winter treks in the world.

Chadar Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Leh (Altitude: 11,400 ft) | Stay at Leh Guesthouse

  • Arrival at Leh Airport: Leh Airport is one of the highest commercial airports in the world, nestled amidst the Himalayan peaks at an altitude of 11,400 feet. Upon stepping out of the plane, you will feel an immediate and dramatic drop in temperature. The cold, crisp mountain air will give you a taste of the adventure ahead.
  • Transfer to Leh Guesthouse: After arriving, board your pre-arranged cab and head to the guesthouse in Leh city. The roads will be lined with snow, and you'll see locals clearing snow from their properties, a common sight in winter.
  • Adapting to Cold Weather: Keep your warm clothing within easy reach, as the temperature in Leh will be significantly colder than other cities, especially if you're coming from lower altitudes. The temperature can drop well below freezing, particularly during the winter months.
  • Acclimatization: This first day is crucial for letting your body adjust to the high-altitude conditions. Relax at the guesthouse, hydrate well, and rest. Leh is located in the Ladakh region, known for its extreme winter conditions, and proper acclimatization is essential to prevent altitude sickness.
  • Exploring Leh Market: In the evening, if you're feeling up to it, you can take a gentle walk to the Leh market. This bustling market, despite the snow, remains partially open and offers a chance for any last-minute shopping for your trek. You can pick up essentials like woolen gear, trekking socks, or even try local delicacies such as thukpa or momos at one of the restaurants.
  • Stay Overnight: Return to your guesthouse and enjoy a quiet night of rest to prepare for the next day.

Day 2: Acclimatization Walk in Leh

  • Morning Walk to Shanti Stupa: Start your day with an acclimatization walk, an important step to getting your body used to the thinner air at high altitudes. You'll begin your walk towards the Shanti Stupa, a stunning Buddhist monument perched on a hilltop overlooking Leh. This serene location offers a magnificent view of the sunrise, casting a golden light over the snow-covered town of Leh and the surrounding Himalayan mountains.
  • Importance of Hydration: Staying hydrated is critical when acclimatizing to high altitudes. Even though the cold weather might make you feel less thirsty, you should drink plenty of water throughout the day to aid the acclimatization process.
  • Relax at the Guesthouse: After your morning walk, return to your guesthouse and spend the day relaxing. The second day is still focused on giving your body the time it needs to adjust to the high-altitude environment, reducing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
  • Leisure Time in Leh: If you feel comfortable, you can explore Leh further or visit local monasteries like Hemis Monastery or Spituk Gompa, which are within driving distance. Alternatively, spend your time enjoying local food and soaking in the tranquil ambiance of the town.
  • Night Stay at Guesthouse: Spend the night at the guesthouse, ensuring you're well-rested for the upcoming adventure.

Day 3: Mandatory Medical Check-Up at Sonam Narbu Hospital or Tourist Information Centre (TIC)

  • Medical Check-Up: In line with government regulations, every trekker must pass a medical check-up before embarking on the Chadar Trek. This mandatory certification ensures that you're physically fit to handle the demanding conditions of the trek, including extreme cold and high-altitude trekking.
  • Sonam Narbu Hospital or TIC: The medical check-up will take place at either Sonam Narbu Hospital or the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Leh. The ground team will arrange transportation for you from your guesthouse to the designated check-up center.
  • Medical Clearance: During the check-up, doctors will assess your vitals, such as oxygen levels, blood pressure, and overall physical health, to ensure you're ready to face the challenges of trekking at high altitudes. A medical clearance certificate will be issued only if you pass the check-up.
  • Proof of Acclimatization: Trekkers are required to show proof of at least two days of acclimatization in Leh before they are allowed to proceed with the trek. Keep your flight boarding passes handy, as they may be required at the medical check-up to confirm your stay in Leh.
  • Leisure Time Post Check-Up: After completing the check-up, you will have the rest of the day at leisure. This is a good time to ensure you have all the necessary gear for the trek, including thermal wear, gloves, caps, trekking poles, and sturdy crampons for walking on ice.
  • Stay Overnight at Guesthouse: Return to your guesthouse and relax, mentally preparing yourself for the adventure of a lifetime.

Day 4: Drive from Leh to Shingra Koma (75 Kms) & Trek to Somo Paldar (3 Kms)

  • EarlyMorning Tea & Breakfast: Kickstart your day with a hearty breakfast, preparing for the thrilling adventure ahead.
  • Scenic Drive to Shingra Koma: Your journey begins with a 75-kilometer drive from Leh to Shingra Koma, along winding roads flanked by towering, snow-clad peaks. The stunning beauty of the Himalayan range will leave you speechless.
  • Trek to Somo Paldar: At Shingra Koma, you’ll deboard and start a 3-kilometer trek to Somo Paldar, your campsite for the night. The trek offers mesmerizing views of rugged mountains and frozen landscapes.
  • Overnight at Somo Paldar Campsite: After reaching the campsite, enjoy the serene surroundings and settle down for a cozy night under the stars.

Day 5: Trek from Somo Paldar to Dib Cave / Tibb (12 Kms)

  • Trek on Frozen River: After breakfast, embark on a 12-kilometer trek to Dib Cave (Tibb), an experience that’s both exhilarating and challenging. Walking on the frozen Zanskar River, you'll be surrounded by steep cliffs, deep ravines, and narrow gorges.
  • Breathtaking Sights: En route, you’ll encounter frozen waterfalls, ice formations, and awe-inspiring landscapes, all bathed in the cold yet mesmerizing winter sun.
  • Butter Tea at Dib Cave: On reaching Dib Cave, indulge in traditional Ladakhi Butter Tea, a warm and energizing local drink made from yak butter, tea leaves, and salt. Relax and unwind at the camp for the night.

Day 6: Trek from Dib Cave / Tibb to Naerak (13 Kms)

  • Most Scenic Trek: Start your trek to Naerak, considered the most beautiful section of the Chadar Trek. Covering 13 kilometers, the journey will take you through spectacular frozen terrain, ice bridges, and towering cliffs.
  • Largest Frozen Waterfall: One of the highlights of this day is the majestic Naerak Waterfall, a massive frozen cascade that is both a natural wonder and an unforgettable sight.
  • Cultural Immersion at Naerak Village: After marveling at the waterfall, trek to Naerak Village, where you’ll get the chance to interact with the locals and learn about their traditional lifestyle. Stay overnight at a comfortable campsite in the village.

Day 7: Return Trek from Naerak to Tibb (13 Kms)

  • Return Journey with New Perspectives: After breakfast, start your return trek to Tibb. Though you are retracing your steps, the frozen river often changes with the weather, creating new patterns and a different experience on the return.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife! The area is home to elusive creatures such as the snow leopard, ibex, and fox, and if you're lucky, you may spot their pugmarks in the snow.
  • Night Halt at Tibb: Arrive at the Dib Cave camp, where you'll spend the night reminiscing about the adventures of the day.

Day 8: Trek from Tibb to Shingra Koma (8 Kms) & Drive to Leh (75 Kms)

  • Trek to Shingra Koma: The final day of your trek begins with an 8-kilometer hike to Shingra Koma. Along the trail, enjoy panoramic views of the towering Zanskar Mountains and keep a lookout for more wildlife.
  • Return Drive to Leh: Once you reach Shingra Koma, you’ll board your vehicle for a scenic 75-kilometer drive back to Leh. Arrive in the evening and check into your hotel for a relaxing night.

Day 9: Departure from Leh

  • Farewell to the Zanskar: As you bid farewell to the enchanting Zanskar Valley, you'll carry with you memories of the mighty frozen river, the warmth of Ladakhi hospitality, and the sheer thrill of completing the Chadar Trek.
  • Sense of Accomplishment: This trek leaves behind a lasting sense of accomplishment, having conquered one of the most challenging and extraordinary treks in the world. The Chadar Trek is truly a memory that will stay with you for life.
