About Bhuj
Bhuj is a beautiful town located in a section of the happening historical region of Rajputana. Founded in the early 16th century by Maharao Hamir, this town bears witness to a lot of historical incidents like the eventful siege laid by Rao Khengarji. This town plays a role in the great Indian epic of Mahabharat and also in Alexander’s expedition.
Bhuj part of Kutch region brings to mind images of arid salt desert, wildlife sanctuaries and Kutchi embroidery. Kutch is all that and much more. It is situated in north-west Gujarat, bordering with Pakistan and is probably the largest district in India. The Rann of Kutch celebrates the Rann Mahotsav during December and January and strives to showcase the rich and unique culture of Kutch.
The city derives its name from fort Bhuia situated on a nearby hill. This city has stood the ravages of time and angry natural forces like the massive earthquake in 2001, but what force can destroy a beauty that is inherent and inbuilt? What force can destroy an ancient culture? And what force can hold a soul possessed by wanderlust from a place as beautiful as this? Today, Bhuj stands as a significant destination on the textile tourism map of India. This place is a wonderful destination for people who love to explore & travel but it’s even a piece of shambala for shopaholics. Bandhni to leather handicrafts, this is an important trade destination for the local craftsmen.
The history enthusiasts must get ready for some real adventure. Your basket list would include the Darbargarh, the erstwhile ruling headquarters of katch, Sharad Baug Palace, a European architectural feat that housed Madan singh, the Maharao of Kutch, the splendid Aina Mahal built in the mid-eighteenth century with its exotic inverted mirrors, 15 metres long scroll showing a Kutch procession, and an illustration of The Rake’s Progress besides the king’s grand gold bed; the Prag mahal which is straight out of a Hindi horror movie which makes it even more interesting other than the fact that no amount of time can destroy the beauty of the architecture, the Rani Mahal, The Folk Art Museum and the Kutch Museum. The museums not only transport one in time given the timelessness of the items put up, it also upholds what the culture of Gujarat stands for, it’s richness and its history.
