About Auroville
An interesting and philosophical outlook towards universal living and progressive values, Auroville is an experimental township founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, a spiritual associate of Sri Aurobindo, and it was aimed to bring all kinds of people together to strengthen humanity and harmonious living for a better world. Shri Aurobindo Society and UNESCO took efforts to accomplish the township. Designed by architect Roger Anger, it is situated in Villupuram District, 15 kilometers north from Pondicherry. Matrimandir, a temple located in the heart of the township, is a huge beaming sphere enclosed with gold. Bordered by a beautiful park, the central dome is utilized for meditation purposes. An estimated 2200 people are residing in the township, belonging to 43 diverse nations.
People with extreme Divine and spiritual consciousness live in Auroville. First time visitors can seek help from the Information Centre. Tourists must step into Matrimandir, which possess 12 rooms and 12 gardens each representing Mother’s qualities and Power, to experience the Divine consciousness.
