About The gates of Aurangabad
When the city was built in 1682, the second viceroyalty, in order to protect his wealth and population order construction of a wall to protect it from the incursions of the Marathas. The original construction was of uniform height of 14 feet, entirely surrounding the city, broken by gates into 54 suburbs, which were in turn walled. Of the 52 gates only 4 gates remain and 9 of the subordinate, ‘suburb’ gates. This gives the city a unique feel, and for the visitor, provides a means to navigate and investigate both the city and its heritage.
