About Thiksey Monastery
Thiksey Monastery is about 18 kms from Leh and is the largest monastery in central Ladakh district. The giant statue of Maitreya, about 40 ft high is very popular with tourists. It is often compared with the famous Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. The monastery has stunning paintings, murals, stupas and swords on display. Visit during the morning prayer and experience spirituality firsthand. The annual festival, in the month of October-November is also a huge draw with tourists.
