About Mysore
Mysore or Mysooru, the quondam capital of Wodeyar dynasty, is located in Karnataka State of India. Since 14th century Mysore was ruled by Wodeyar Family. However, for short period of over 40 years, the city was under the rule of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Even though the city was relieved from the grip of kings and kingdom long back, its royal heritage, grandiose gardens, opulent palaces, etc. gives the visitors, a feeling as if they are in the sovereignty.
Mysore also has its own mythological importance where the demon named; Mahishasur was killed by the Goddess Chamudeshwari here. Being called as “City of Palaces,” Mysore has many palaces to be visited. Most of these royal buildings are built of Dravidian style of architecture. The magnificent and grandior of such palaces shows the extravagant lifestyle of the Wodeyars. Chamundi Hills and Brindavan Garden are few other vital spots must be visited nearby Mysore. KSR dam and Mysore zoo are also few tourist attractions. Mysore also houses some of the famous temples like Mahabelswara Temple, Chamundi Temple, etc. for spiritual lovers. The Dussera festival which takes place in month of October or November for 15 days is the main attraction for tourists. Accommodating facilities in Mysore ranges from budget hotels to five start category Palace turned hotels like “Lalith Mahal”. The city is famous for “Mysore Pak” a delicious sweet made up of gram flour, sugar and ghee. Tourists must taste this lip-smacking sweet in Mysore.
The cuisine of Mysore tastes like Udupi recipes. Tourists can start the day with variety of Dosas and Idlies which are served with 3-4 types of Chutneys for breakfast. Lunch is the authentic Mysore cuisine which includes variety rice like Chitranna, Bisebele bath, VangiBath and Pulliogayre. Mysore city has huge vegetation of Sandalwood and Rosewood in its surroundings. Thus the artifacts and statues made up of these woods will serve as a perfect memento for visiting this city. Also the city offers the popular “Mysore Paintings” for art lovers. The Silk saris famously known as “Mysore Silk” are sold out by the authorized stores and government stores. One should be very careful while purchasing the above mentioned items, as they maybe duplicated also. Better to stick with authorized showrooms and Government Stores.
