About Fatehpur Sikri
The ancient city of Fatehpur Sikri was founded by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar and it served to be the capital of the Mughal Kingdom from 1571 to 1585.
Fatehpur Sikri termed as the "Ghost City" was built by King Akbar as gesture to honor a Sufi saint, Salim Chishti, whose blessings gave him three sons. This walled city took 15 years to design and build, and the most exquisite palaces, elegant mosques, mighty courts and harems were erected here and the Emperor himself took huge deal of personal interest in the architecture of the this edifice.
Inside the Fatehpur Shikri Palace tourists can come across many marquees. The palace complex was surrounded by five miles wall. The complex had severe water scarcity and so people deserted it. Tourists will be enthralled by its architectural style. Other than the Islamic style of architecture, there is also a great influence which is drawn from Hindu and Jain structural design carved from the indigenous red sandstone. One of the best preserved Mughal legacies in India Fatehpur Sikhri is UNSECO’s World Hertiage Site. Travelers should mostly look out for Buland Darwaza, Jama Mosque, Diwan-e-Aam, Panch Mahal, Tomb of Salmi Chisti and Birbals’ House inside the colossal complex. Fatehpur Sikhri is a paradigm of the Mughal Era’s royal extravagance and prosperous past.
As you enter you see the larger than life entrance to the white marble mosque which is known as Buland Darwaza. The mosque of Salim Chisti is still famous for blessing the childless ladies with babies. It is said that any lady who ties the red thread in the mosque will soon be blessed with a child. Enjoy the architectural beauty of Mughal era by walking through the shaded arcade around the mosque and you will be able to appreciate the history of Fatehpur Sikri.
