About Guruvayur Temple
Guruvayur Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and it is one among five important Temples of Lord Krishna in India. This temple is also termed as “Bhuloka Vaikunta” or “Dwaraka Of South India”. The temple is known to have followed a strict dress code that of Dhotis and sarees even for the pilgrims, and a laid down way of performing Pooja by the priests.This procedure was laid down by Adi Sankara. The descendants of Cennas Narayana Nambhudiri have been performing Pooja rituals at the temple since it came into being.
The legend says that Lord Vishnu had instructed Brihaspati (Guru of Gods) to install an idol from Dwaraka at Guruvayur at a place adjoining a tank full of beautiful Lotus Flowers.This Brihaspati did using assistance of Vayu Bhagawan (God of wind) and that is how the place got its name “Guruvayur”.
The temple has an inner enclosure (chuttambalam), a Golden flagstand 33.5 m high, Vilakkumadam where earthen lamps are lit by the devotees,and shrines of Sri Ganapathi, Sri Sastha etc.
