Detailed overview
The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is the home of the Giant Indian Squirrel and a huge number of other animals and birds. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra is spread across an extensive area of 120 square kilometres on the Western Ghats or the Sahyadri Ranges.
The Bhimashankara temple (one of 12 Jyotirlingas) is a composite of old and the new structures and is built in the Nagara style of architecture. It is a modest yet graceful temple and it dates back to mid 18th century. The Shikhar of the temple was built by Nana Phadnavis.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Karjat station and trek to Bhimashankar and reach back Mumbai.
- You are requested to report at Karjat railway station at 1:10 AM and meet our host here.
- You will board a local taxi to the base village to start the trek.
- Reach the base village in the middle of the night and you can take some rest for a while.
- Wake up by 4:30 AM and have some breakfast and tea to recharge your body.
- You will have a brief introduction about the trek and start the trek with a warm up walk by 5:30 AM.
- It is an easy trek and it would take 4-5 hours to reach the top at Bhimashankar.
- You will have enough time to explore the top and visit the Bhimashankar temple
- You can have lunch which is self carried by you.
- Post lunch, start descending back to the starting point of the trek and reach the base by 6:30 PM.
- Take local transportation towards Karjat railway station and you are expected to reach the station by 7:30 PM.
- You can take the train from Karjat station to Mumbai for your onward journey.
